Clinical Research Training Programs

The NIH recognizes the need for well-trained clinical researchers to bridge the gap between the basic researcher’s bench and the patient’s bedside. The Clinical Research Curriculum Award (K30) provides support for the development of the didactic training needed to provide in-depth instruction in the skills, methodology, theories, and conceptual framework needed by independent, clinical investigators. The K30 program is administered by the NHLBI with the oversight of a trans-NIH committee of program staff from all the contributing Institutes. Here you will find more information and links to training programs across the United States.

Also see the ACGME list of accredited programs. The site contains a wealth of information including names, addresses, and other contact information.

Research Forum & Medical Sudent/Resident Research Prize
Sponsored through the generosity of GYRUS ACMI ENT DIVISION

Resident Research Prizes: First ($2,000), second ($1,500), and third ($1,000) place are available in both clinical and basic science categories through the generosity of GYRUS ACMI ENT Division. All manuscripts submitted for this competition must have a resident as senior author and must describe work that has not been placed under active consideration for publication other than in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. All award winning manuscripts will be automatically accepted as oral or poster presentations at the Translational & Basic Research Presentations Program (previously called the Research Forum) and will be submitted to the Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for further review and consideration for publication in the journal; alternatively, manuscripts may be submitted to the Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology. All award winners are expected to attend both the Opening Ceremony and the Research Awards Ceremony to receive their awards.

Medical Student Research Prize: A single award of $1,000 is available in either the basic or clinical science category.  The conditions and instructions for this competition are the same as those for the Resident Research Awards with the exception that the senior author of a submitted manuscript must have been a medical student at the time the research was conducted.

DEADLINE:  All manuscripts and abstracts must be submitted by February 29, 2008.

How to apply for clinical and basic science research paper prizes:

Manuscript Guidelines:  Follow the Journal guidelines. Reference limit is 20, and the word limit is 3,000 for the entire manuscript. Access the full specifications.  NOTE: We are following the guidelines for the Journal so authors who are awarded prizes do not need to re-write the manuscript prior to submission to the Journal which is one of the provisions for being awarded a prize. The Journal may bend their rules a little for prize winners. However, we recommend that whenever possible you adhere to the guidelines of the Journal.

Submitting a manuscript for prizes:  Residents or students interested in the clinical and basic science research paper prizes should send an electronic copy of their manuscript to Stephanie L. Jones, Assistant Director, Research sljones@entnet.org.  No applications for prizes will be considered unless an abstract is also submitted to the Translational & Basic Research Presentations Program (previously called the Research Forum) via AMOS http://am.abstractsmanagement.net/.  Please do not send hard copies.

Abstract Guidelines:  Applicants should submit a structured abstract of up to 150 words with the headings: Objective, Study Design, Subjects and Methods, Results, and Conclusion.  If awarded the prize, the abstract will appear in the Research Awards Ceremony booklet that will be handed out at the AAO-HNS Conference in Chicago. NOTE: We are following the abstract guidelines for the Journal so authors who are awarded prizes do not need to re-write the abstract prior to submission. The Journal may bend their rules a little for prize winners.  However, we recommend that whenever possible you adhere to the guidelines of the Journal.

Submitting an abstract: All clinical and basic science research paper prize applicants are required to submit an abstract to the Translational & Basic Research Presentations Program for oral or poster presentations using AMOS http://am.abstractsmanagement.net/.   Once you enter AMOS and select 'Submission' on the left navigation, please select 'Research Forum' (do not submit to the 'Scientific Program').  When you proceed to the online submission form, please read the text, directions, and terms carefully. You will be asked to agree to those terms to submit your abstract. Any item marked with an asterisk (*) is required information, and must be completed. The abstract should be for the oral or poster presentation you would present at the conference related to the manuscript submitted for the Research Prize.

During Step 5, just before you submit the abstract, please include the following text in the comments box 'Research Prize Applicant.'

You will receive confirmation via email when your submission is received, but this is not confirmation that your presentation has been accepted. The status of your abstract will be emailed in late May, 2008. A unique tracking number will be provided for all submissions. Please use this number in all correspondence regarding your application. Note:  If you do not receive a tracking number or email confirming your submission, your application may not have been transmitted correctly.  Additionally, if your mail system uses filters to block unsolicited email, please be aware that you might miss important information from the Academy and Coordinator for this program. We suggest that you modify your filters as appropriate.

NEW THIS YEAR: Each co-presenter is required to fill out their own disclosures/disclaimer information.  If you enter an email address for a co-presenter, they will receive an email from the AAO-HNS that includes a unique link to AMOS.  Each presenter must click on the link provided in this email in order to properly attach your presentation to their account, so that they may fill out the disclosure/disclaimer information  If they do not have an AAO-HNS account, they must create one through AMOS after clicking on the link in the email.

IMPORTANT: We strongly encourage you to have the following information available before you begin your application:

  • complete name (including degree), AAO-HNS ID number (if applicable), email, a permanent address, and CME disclosure information about each author, and
  • your abstract, composed and spell-checked, in a separate word processing program.

This will streamline your submission process and help ensure that you don't lose information due to system problems.

Grant Awards

  • AAO-HNSF CORE Research Grant Awards

The Academy and its Foundation are committed to the future well-being of our members and their patients. In an effort to strengthen research support in all areas of otolaryngology, the AAO-HNSF has joined forces with several senior societies to broaden research opportunities, and to streamline and enhance the research application and review process. The Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE) serves as a central clearinghouse and facilitator for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery research programs. Several granting mechanisms area available each year to fund one-year and two-year, non-renewable grants. Additional grants or new grants programs may be announced as more resources become available. Funding is subject to the receipt of sufficiently meritorious applications.

Grant Writing

  • What is a Study Section like? Ever wonder what a Study Section is like? The Center for Scientific Review has produced a video of a mock study section meeting to provide an inside look at how NIH grant applications are reviewed for scientific and technical merit. The video shows how outside experts assess applications and how review meetings are conducted to ensure fairness. The video also includes information on what applicants can do to improve the chances their applications will receive a positive review.
